Auto Have you ever wondered? Why there is a black button on the seatbelt Shutterstock By N. Pedersen 21. November 2025 Safety A small black plastic piece on the car seat belt has a practical function that many people don’t know about – and it’s not about safety, but comfort. Most people have probably noticed the black button in the middle of the car seatbelt, but not everyone knows why it’s there. The button is not necessary for safety, but has a practical function that makes the belt easier to use. The button prevents the buckle tongue from sliding all the way down when the belt is not in use. This keeps the locking tongue in a fixed position, making it easy to grab and buckle in. Without the button, the tongue would slide to the side and be harder to reach when getting into the car. It is considered a convenience rather than a necessary safety feature. If the button is missing or broken, it is possible to buy a new one in many car accessory stores. The price is around 10 euro and installation takes less than two minutes. Having the button fitted by a professional can cost up to 40 euro. It is recommended that a new button is always placed in exactly the same place as the original, as this is where the harness mechanics are adapted to work optimally. Extra features: Loops and noise dampening In some cars, there is also a special loop on the seatbelt. This loop has previously played an important role in the car’s safety system. In the event of a strong impact, such as a collision, a stitched seam in the loop can give way and extend the belt by a few centimeters. This reduces the pressure on the body in a collision. In newer cars, this function is often replaced by metal elements in the harness retractor mechanism. These parts deform under load and allow extra webbing to roll out, which has the same effect as the loop. Today, however, the loop is often used more as a noise absorber. It prevents the metal buckle from rattling against the car’s B-pillar while driving – and ensures a more comfortable driving experience. Share article Where do you want to share?
