Mobile Are you using Google on your Samsung Galaxy? Then it’s bad news Shutterstock By N. Pedersen 17. December 2025 Millions of Galaxy phones are missing an important Google update that normally protects users’ data and systems. Millions of Samsung Galaxy owners are no longer receiving key security updates from Google. This can have significant consequences for users’ data security. Google usually releases so-called Google Play system updates independently of the classic firmware updates from the manufacturers. These updates close vulnerabilities and improve the security of important Android components. According to Google, the update takes place automatically in the background and does not require active participation from the user. Missing updates since the summer Several sources, including Galaxy Club and SamMobile, are now reporting that many Galaxy devices have not received any Google Play system update since July or August 2025. This means that important security updates are missing, even though regular security updates from Samsung continue to be released. According to Forbes, these updates can have a direct impact on protection against malware, data theft and system manipulation. According to SammyFans, the responsibility does not lie with Samsung. Instead, it is Google that has withheld the updates. Only a few newer and more expensive models have received Play updates until September. However, the vast majority of Galaxy phones have not been updated for months, leaving millions of users without the latest security measures. Challenges in the Android ecosystem Samsung is the largest Android manufacturer with around a third of all Android smartphones worldwide. Yet many of its devices lag behind Google’s own Pixel phones, which receive updates faster and more regularly. According to several tech media outlets, this points to a structural problem in the Android ecosystem, where not all users are guaranteed the same protection, even if they use devices with the same operating system. The difference between Google’s own devices and devices from third-party manufacturers becomes apparent when important security updates are not delivered on time. This can damage trust in the system and create uncertainty among users, especially at a time when the threat of cyber attacks and data leaks is increasing. Galaxy users can check the update status themselves by going to Settings > Security & Privacy > Updates > Google Play System Update. Here you can manually check if an update is available. If your device has been without updates for several months, it is recommended to pay extra attention to suspicious activity and keep apps and operating system updated where possible.
