Auto 67 copies: World’s rarest Volvo put up for sale Bilweb Auctions By N. Pedersen 20. November 2025 Auction Volvo One of Volvo’s most unusual models ever is now on sale in Sweden. Only 67 examples were produced and the car has been a well-kept secret for most people. One of the rarest models from Volvo has just come up for auction. It’s the Volvo Sport, also known as the P1900, of which only 67 were produced in the mid-1950s. The current car is number 50 in the series and was first registered on New Year’s Eve 1957. The car has had four owners since its first registration, with the last one acquiring it in 1984. It was a car enthusiast from Uppsala in Sweden who used the car at a few vintage car events before it was stored in a garage in recent years. Now his daughter has put car up for sale. According to BilWeb Auctions, the mileage is only 87,000 kilometers and the car appears partially original with several restorations completed. The estimate is between 900,000 and 1,050,000 Swedish kronor, which corresponds to between 82,000 and 100,000 euro. The auction runs until November 20. Inspired by the Corvette and built in fiberglass The origins of the model date back to 1953, when Volvo co-founder Assar Gabrielsson on a trip to the United States became fascinated by the growing market for sports cars and in particular Chevrolet’s Corvette, which was built in fiberglass-reinforced polyester. Volvo P1900 – Bilweb Auctions This led to a collaboration with Californian company Glasspar to develop the body for a new, lightweight Volvo sports car based on technology from Volvo PV. The project was soon underway and in 1954 the first body parts arrived in Sweden. The Volvo Sport was first shown in June 1954 and was officially introduced at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1955. However, production did not begin until 1956 and the plan for a first series of 300 cars was never realized. Volvo P1900 – Car Web Auctions The car was equipped with a 1.4 liter B14A engine with 70 horsepower and a three-speed gearbox taken from the PV444. Many of the components were identical to those of Volvo’s existing models. Criticism, quality issues and an abrupt stop Despite the high ambitions, the project was quickly met with internal criticism at Volvo. The open sports car in fiberglass did not fit the company’s image and the car had several technical problems. The frame was weak, the bodywork cracked and the doors were fragile. At the same time, comfort was limited due to the lack of a hood and window functions. After only 67 cars for customers, and four or five prototypes, the project was stopped by new Volvo CEO Gunnar Engellau. – This is not a product with acceptable Volvo quality. We have to bet on Amazon, was his assessment. The decision turned out to be right. The Amazon model was a success and the short-lived sports car quickly faded into the background. Today, the P1900 has become a coveted collector’s item while the Volvo Amazon has become an icon. Share article Where do you want to share?
