Mobile Apple working on more satellite features for iPhone By K. Glad 12. November 2025 Apple iPhone These developments could change the way we use phones outside of coverage. Apple is expanding the satellite capabilities that iPhone users are already familiar with. Today, an iPhone can call for help and send messages via satellite when there is no cellular coverage, but the company is trying to go one step further. According to Bloomberg technology reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is developing features that will give satellite connectivity much broader uses than just emergencies. The goal is for users to be able to send pictures via satellite and not just text messages. At the same time, Apple is exploring how satellites can be used to improve coverage for 5G, giving cell towers extra range by utilizing signals from space. Gurman says the company plans to give the app satellite connectivity so that maps and navigation can be used in areas without cellular coverage or Wi-Fi. For many travelers and outdoor enthusiasts, this could significantly change the experience. It would mean that a hiker in a remote area can share their location and a photo of their surroundings without an internet connection. According to Engadget.com, Apple is also working on an improvement to make the satellite connection more natural to use. Instead of pointing the phone at the sky, as you have to do today, the upcoming technology will be able to maintain the connection automatically, even indoors or in shaded areas. This is an essential development if satellite communication is to become part of everyday life. In addition, Apple is preparing an API that developers can use to add satellite connectivity in their own apps. This could open up entirely new types of services, such as security solutions, travel apps and communication in disaster areas. A long-term strategy Apple has not yet set a date as to when the new satellite features are expected to be available. However, history shows that the company often waits a few years between launches of this type. Satellite emergency calling came in 2022, and satellite text messaging became available with iOS 18 the following year. Expanding the technology therefore makes sense as a next step. Apple invests billions every year in developing connections outside the traditional mobile network, and the ambition seems to be that the iPhone should be able to be used everywhere, no matter where you are, without additional equipment or expensive subscriptions. If the plans succeed, satellite communication could soon become a natural part of the iPhone’s general functionality.
