News Many people do it wrong: How to clean your TV correctly Shutterstock By N. Pedersen 24. November 2025 Fingerprints and dust can ruin the picture on your TV. Learn how to clean your screen effectively without scratches and streaks. A dirty TV screen can quickly take away the enjoyment of both movies and sports. Fingerprints, grease and dust are visible, especially in dark scenes, and the wrong cleaning methods can, in the worst case, permanently damage the screen surface. Fortunately, proper cleaning only requires a few simple tools and a little patience. Why modern screens require extra care Unlike mobile screens, TV screens often have an anti-glare coating and a delicate surface that can be easily damaged. Household paper, coarse fabric or harsh detergents can cause scratches or discoloration. It’s not just about looks. A clean screen improves contrast and image sharpness and prevents dirt from building up into a hard layer that is difficult to remove. For cleaning we recommend: A soft dust brush or anti-static cloth Two good quality microfiber cloths Distilled water (or filtered water) A drop of mild detergent if needed A small spray bottle (optional) Step-by-step guide for effective and safe cleaning 1. Turn off the TV and remove dust: Turn it off and unplug it. This is both safer and makes it easier to see dirt. Use a soft cloth or dusting brush with long, light strokes. Avoid pressure and rough materials. 2. Remove stains and grease: If there are fingerprints, mix a little mild detergent in a glass of distilled water. Lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with the solution (never directly on the screen). Gently wipe the stains with circular motions. 3. Give the screen an even finish: wipe with a clean, slightly damp cloth and finish with a completely dry microfiber cloth. Move gently across the entire surface in the same direction, for example horizontally, to avoid streaks. Avoid household paper, glass cleaner and alcohol-based cleaners. These can damage the anti-glare layer and leave matte spots. Keep your screen clean longer with good habits Avoid touching the screen with your fingers Don’t place the TV too close to the kitchen or cooking area Remove dust weekly with dry microfiber cloth Also clean accessories like 3D glasses with mild detergents and without heat A clean screen not only improves picture quality but also provides a calmer experience at home. With a few simple principles, you can easily maintain your TV screen and extend the life of your equipment. Share article Where do you want to share?
